Becoming a quilt batting specialist
Even if the newest technologies allow manufacturing quilts on an industrial scale, the people that are interested about their comfort and they are ready to invest in quality items know that a manual made quilt is better than any product made on the manufacturing line. Even if you won’t have orders like in the past, becoming a quilt batting specialist is a moneymaking initiative. However, you must know several aspects about this manufacturing process before starting your own business
Preparing the materials
Even if people would order quilts having different sizes, the average quilt has about the same dimensions. You should also start by training with a few quilts before taking actual orders from clients. Start with a medium sized quilt. For this, you will need to prepare the back. You will need a piece of material with at least 40 inches width and length. You will have to seam the pieces together. The easiest way is to seam the pieces right on the middle, but the majority of your customers will require special models. The best idea would be to draw a diagram first, or to use the pre-made diagrams from the specialized books. Besides the 40 inches quilt, you will also need additional 4 inches on each side of the material, so you could work with it.
Always use the patterns. If you have a pattern that you like and you have tried it before, it will surely be great for the next models. At least at the beginning, a single pattern is great to learn the secrets of quilt batting.
How to bat up the quilt
Of course, your table is important for batting the quilt. You will need a strong flat surface. It is recommended for the table to have the dimensions of the quilt, but as we are talking about some huge tables, you might resume to two simple tables pushed together. If you don’t have back problems, you can also put the quilt directly on the floor to work with it. For the larger models, this is the only acceptable method. Work on the bare floor, but make sure it is clean. If you work on a soft carpet, the shape of the quilt after batting might be affected. Clean the surface completely, even if you are working on a clean carpet. Moreover, you can also prepare the surface with some special solutions like spray sizing. This way, the quilt will not be wrinkled and you will also work easier. If you work on the table, clamp the quilt to the table by using clips.
Leave two inches of material off the table and then use the clamps. The edge is necessary, and you will also need to make sure that the material is fully stretched. This way, you will prevent the apparition of wrinkles. If it helps you, drawing some lines on the table might be a good idea to respect the dimensions. If the quilt is too large for your table, you can work on sections. One the batting is over for a section, get to the next one. Fold the batting and smooth the material back on the surface. The most important aspect is to bat the top of the quilt and to smooth it after finishing the previous section. This way, you will avoid the bubbles that will create an unpleasant aspect.
Some tables are not suited for clamping. Unless you have a professional table, you might not be able to use the clamps to fix the material. You can work on the floor using the rubber tape to fix the edges of the material. Use the help of the apprentice or somebody else, as both sides of the quilt must be dragged, and the process has to be symmetrical. Then, all you need to do is to start batting.
The batting must be smothered from one side to the other, and you will have to insist whenever you see a bubble appearing. Strat from the center and go to the edges smoothly. If a bubble appeared and you can’t get rid if it by batting, leave it for the night and use the ironing machine for about 10 minutes at a low temperature in the morning.
Once the batting process is over, you must add the top of the quilt. You can make it as larger as you want, but 2 inches would make it look elegant. It is not important, as long as you are able to keep the edges parallel. This is why the quilt must be perfectly stretched and you might need to get some help. If you can’t get help from somebody, a good idea would be to use the table to stick the edges with the clips.
Then, you will need to start basing the layers together. Leave a tail of about 4 inches. Start from the centre and leave the tail so you could see it at the end. For a bigger model, you might need to use some pins to stitch the layers.
Start from the center, and sew symmetrical rows, and lines. Use the models if you like, as those models would make the quilt unique. For the last stitches, you might remain with some excess material. This only happens if the batting process was ineffective. In this case, it is better to remove the excess material. The cutter can be used for this process, and you can remove all the extra material within seconds. Once you have shaped the quilt, you will need to sew it back as it was.
